Creative Process as a Trauma-Informed Approach to Collective Grief in Educational Settings
This research examines how the creative process in dance can support collective healing, resilience, and community connection following traumatic events in educational settings.
Project Overview:
When violence occurs within a school community, the effects extend far beyond those directly involved. This research explores how dance and creative practice can provide trauma-informed approaches that help students and educators process shared grief, foster resilience, and rebuild a sense of community.
Research Methods:
This project draws on scholarly literature, interviews with dance educators, reflective movement practices, and participation in professional conferences and memorial sites. These experiences inform the development of creative strategies for addressing collective trauma in educational environments.
Research Timeline:
Conducted between Spring 2026 and Fall 2027, the project includes a literature review, educator interviews, reflective embodied research, and professional engagement through the daCi USA National Gathering. The findings will inform the creation of a trauma-informed dance lesson plan designed to support educators working with students experiencing collective grief.
Outcomes:
The project will culminate in an adaptable trauma-informed dance lesson plan designed for educational settings. The research will also be shared through conference presentations and professional publications.
